01 / Research & Discovery

Understanding the Language of Digital Safety

Before exploring opportunities within TikTok's Family Pairing experience, I conducted a competitive content audit of four major social platforms: Instagram, Snapchat, Discord, and YouTube.I examined how each platform communicates parental supervision, establishes privacy boundaries, and guides families through the pairing process.

By comparing voice and tone, terminology, and key user flows, I sought to understand how content design influences trust, transparency, and the balance between parental oversight and teen independence.

My research focused on a central question:

How can language make parental supervision feel supportive rather than restrictive?

02 / Competitive Landscape

Four Platforms, Four Approaches to Safety

While each platform offers tools for family supervision, their content strategies reveal different approaches to communicating safety and control.

Instagram — Supportive & Supervisory

Frames supervision as a partnership while maintaining clear parental authority. Emphasizes what guardians can access and what remains private.

Uses direct, action-oriented language that emphasizes visibility into teen activity and protective tools. Encourages teens to verify the identity of their supervisor.

YouTube — Clarity & Information

Takes a neutral, informative approach, using consistent language across parent and teen experiences while distinguishing between public and private information.

03 / Key Research Findings

What Makes Safety Feel Safe?

Across the four platforms, I identified recurring content patterns that influence how families understand and engage with supervision tools.

01

Transparency Builds Trust

Clearly communicating what parents can and cannot see helps establish privacy boundaries and supports informed decisions about pairing.

02

Safety Should Feel Collaborative

Language that emphasizes partnership and shared responsibility can position supervision as a supportive relationship rather than a form of surveillance.

03

One Experience, Two Audiences

Parents and teens approach Family Pairing with different expectations. Audience-specific language can address these needs without compromising consistency or transparency.

04

Clarity Encourages Informed Participation

Explicit invitation statuses, expiration times, and unlinking consequences help users understand the pairing process and make confident decisions.

05 / Final Design

Making Safety Easier to Understand

Building on insights from the competitive audit, the final designs focused on making TikTok's Family Pairing experience more intuitive, transparent, and approachable for teens.

01 — Bringing Clarity to the Teen Homepage

INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE & COMPREHENSION

Making Complex Information Feel Accessible

  1. The redesigned teen homepage brings together screen time, connections, and account activity within a centralized dashboard.

  2. By organizing information into distinct, digestible sections, the experience helps teens understand their digital habits without overwhelming them with information.

02 — Making Privacy Boundaries Explicit

TRANSPARENCY & USER AUTONOMY

Helping Teens Understand Their Choices

  1. The account privacy and security flows introduce contextual guidance around privacy settings, account management, and unlinking.

  2. Rather than relying on generic confirmation messages, these interactions provide additional context at moments when users may need to understand the consequences of their actions.

  3. This approach reflects a central finding from the competitive audit: transparent language is especially important when users are making decisions about privacy and parental supervision.

03 — Guiding Users Through Change

ONBOARDING & FEATURE DISCOVERABILITY

Introducing New Features With Purpose

  1. The refreshed teen homepage includes an onboarding moment that introduces the updated dashboard and directs users toward additional information.

  2. The content establishes an entry point for understanding the redesigned experience while allowing teens to explore the available features in greater detail.

06 / Reflection

Designing for Trust, Not Just Understanding

This project reinforced the importance of content design in shaping how users experience digital safety.

Through competitive research and product design, I explored how language can help communicate complex safety features in ways that feel clear, approachable, and transparent.

I learned that effective content design is not simply about simplifying language. It is about anticipating users' questions, providing context at critical moments, and helping people understand the choices available to them.
